Yesterday, we saw Naomi’s family leave Bethlehem because of famine. They just wanted relief, a short break from the hunger. But what they thought would be temporary soon turned into home.
“And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.” (Ruth 1:2)
Those two words, “continued there”, carry so much weight. What was supposed to be a quick escape became a long stay in a place God never intended for them to settle.
And isn’t that how compromise usually starts? Just a little shift, just a small choice that feels harmless. “Just this once,” we tell ourselves. “I’ll stop soon.” But “just once” quietly becomes “just one more time,” and before long, we’re tangled up in something we never planned to stay in.
The Enemy’s Whisper
That’s how the enemy works. Subtle, patient, persuasive. He doesn’t shove; he whispers.
“It’s not a big deal.” “You deserve to be happy.” “No one will ever know.” “God will forgive you anyway.”
But those whispers are lies dressed as comfort. Sin always costs more than it promises, and it never leaves what it touches the same.
The Cost of Staying
“And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. And they took wives of the women of Moab… and they dwelled there about ten years. And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them.” (Ruth 1:3-5)
In a span of ten years, Naomi buried her husband and both sons. She went from a full house to empty arms. What began as a move for comfort ended in deep loss.
So friend, if you’ve wandered, it’s not too late to return. You can always turn your steps back toward Bethlehem, toward the One who restores what sin and sorrow have stolen.
Reflection and Action
Be honest with yourself. Identify one step you took outside of God’s will that still holds you back today.
Anchor your heart. Memorize this verse: “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.” (Psalm 119:10)
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I’ve sometimes chosen comfort over obedience. Forgive me for settling in places You never called me to. Restore me where I’ve wandered, and give me strength to stay in Your will. Help me to love Your Word and follow it with my whole heart. Amen.
